Belly were a standout band in the ’90s alt-rock boom, fronted by Tanya Donelly (Throwing Muses and The Breeders). Their debut Star (1993) made them instant favourites alongside The Cranberries, Mazzy Star, and Juliana Hatfield. With their second album King (1995), Belly headed to the Bahamas to record and pushed for a bigger, bolder sound.
Though it didn’t hit the same commercial highs as Star, King was a pivotal moment for the band. Belly toured heavily behind it—playing Glastonbury with Weezer, Pulp, and The Cure, and supporting R.E.M. across Europe. Back in the U.S., they hit the road with Catherine Wheel and Jewel. Today, King stands as an underrated gem of the era: a confident, hook-filled record that shows Belly carving out their own space in a crowded and competitive alt-rock scene.
